RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the successor to SMS built into the default messaging app on supported Android phones. For businesses, RCS Business Messaging (RBM) turns that inbox into something closer to an app: verified branding, images and video, carousels, suggested replies and action buttons, all without the customer installing anything.
What an RCS message can contain
- Rich card – an image or video, a title, a description and up to a few buttons.
- Carousel – several cards the customer swipes through: products, seat options, plan comparisons.
- Suggested replies – tap-to-answer chips such as Confirm, Reschedule, Talk to support.
- Suggested actions – open a link, dial a number, share a location, add to calendar.
- Verified sender – your business name, logo and colour on the conversation, checked by the carrier.
RCS vs SMS vs WhatsApp
| SMS | RCS | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Default messages app | Default messages app | WhatsApp app |
| Rich media | No | Yes | Yes |
| Requires opt-in | Promotional only | Promotional only | All business-initiated |
| Device support | Every phone | Supported Android + network | Any phone with WhatsApp |
| Fallback | – | Falls back to SMS | Falls back to SMS |
The practical reading: RCS gives you WhatsApp-like richness inside the messaging app customers already have open for OTPs and bank alerts, and it degrades gracefully to SMS when a device does not support it.
Where RCS shines
- Order tracking – product image, delivery status and a Track button in one card.
- Promotions – a carousel of the new collection with Shop now on each card.
- Tickets and boarding passes – a branded card with the QR code.
- Appointment confirmations – suggested replies replace "reply YES to confirm".
- Surveys – one-tap answers, far higher completion than a link.
SMS fallback is the whole point
Not every customer has an RCS-capable device or network. A good RCS setup checks capability before sending: RCS where it is supported, SMS everywhere else, one report across both. Nobody is missed and the richer experience reaches everyone who can receive it.
Getting started
RCS needs a verified brand agent (name, logo, description) and message templates for business-initiated traffic. Setup usually takes a couple of weeks including carrier verification. See RCS Business Messaging for what is included, or talk to an expert about a pilot on your order-update flow.
